made by discounting the obvious and betting on the unexpected.” George Soros

Financial Markets

Our aim is to enhance and preserve the value of the Patel Family financial markets portfolio. We develop strategies to make that happen.
As markets and technology continue to develop, at Core, we understand the Trading Room must evolve at a faster pace, expanding our capacity to support the immediate and future needs of our Group: Execution, Risk Management and Treasury.

We operate a sophisticated 24-hour Trading Room to provide coverage through all time zones. Our knowledge of global markets, coupled with Core’s access to the best global research, enables us to provide a comprehensive solution across every major asset class. Specifically, we have access to Equities, Fixed Income including Credit and Rates, Foreign Exchange, Commodities and Precious Metals, in addition to Research, across both developed and emerging markets.

We operate a Multi Strategy Trading Room. However, the bulk of our returns are derived from Global Macro Trading. In essence, we operate like a Global Macro Hedge Fund. We seek to capitalise on global opportunities through active trading and risk management across asset classes, geographies, currencies, and risk themes.

What is 'Global Macro Strategy'?

A global macro strategy is a hedge fund strategy that bases its holdings, such as long and short positions in various equity, fixed income, currency, commodities and futures markets, primarily on the overall economic and political views of various countries, or their macroeconomic principles. For example, if a manager believes the United States is headed into recession, he might short sell stocks and futures contracts on major U.S. indices or the U.S. dollar, or seeing big opportunity for growth in Singapore, might take long positions in Singapore's assets.

Core construct’s portfolios at the asset class level based on a top-level view of the global markets. This type of global macro provides us the most flexibility as our Traders can go long or short with any type of asset anywhere in the world.

We also use systematic trading, where instead of creating portfolios based on top-level views of global trends, our Traders use price-based and trend-following algorithms to help construct portfolios and execute trades.

BREAKING DOWN 'Global Macro Strategy'
Global macro funds build portfolios around predictions and projections of large-scale events on the country-wide, continental and global scale, implementing opportunistic investment strategies to capitalize on macroeconomic and geopolitical trends. Global macro trading styles are considered among the least restricted available as they generally place any type of trade they choose using almost any type of security available.

Global macro Traders at Core generally use a combination of currency-based, interest rate-based and stock index-based trading strategies.
Within the context of currency strategies, our Traders typically seek opportunities based on the relative strength of one currency to another. We monitor and project economic and monetary policies around the world and place currency trades using futures, forwards, options and spot transactions. Major currency pairs, which are developed country currencies versus the US dollar, are extremely liquid and trade 24 hours a day, 6 days a week.

Our interest rate strategies usually invest in sovereign debt, making directional bets as well as relative value trades. Strategies include outright directional movements on government debt along with relative value trading in which a portfolio manager trades one debt instrument relative to another. Debt instruments are available on futures exchanges, over the counter markets and options contracts.

Regarding stock index strategies, our global macro Traders make country-specific directional bets on market indices using futures, options and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Commodity index trades are also included in this category. A small number of our Traders deploy strategies focused on only emerging market countries.

Core’s global macro Traders may position themselves around a particular outcome or they can simply set up positions to profit from global market volatility when they don’t have confidence in a prediction but know that a binary outcome is imminent.

Our Traders ultimate goal is to find the right mix of assets to maximise returns if the predicted outcome occurs.

Characteristics of a Global Trader

We operate a large portfolio of companies, very successful in NZ and around the world. These offer us insights into many different markets and business models that we then apply to potential businesses and partners. Early Risers

Global Market Traders at Core rise with the sun. Logically, this makes sense, since markets open at the start of the day.

Roll with the punches

No matter how much you try, you can’t win them all. We say to all our Traders at Core... losing money is inevitable.

Risk-taker

One interesting, and slightly disturbing, study finds that the best traders have much more in common with...

Competitive.

It goes hand-in-hand with being a risk-taker, but there’s a difference between a good Trader and a great Trader.

Our Philosophy

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.  Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking.  Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.  And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."  Steve Jobs
